The KGI® Story
The Klein Group Instrument® for Effective Leadership and Participation in Teams is unique in its ability to assess a range of behaviors that are essential for dynamic leadership and quality teamwork. The KGI® assessment is based on more than three decades of practice, research, and analysis. The research process utilized quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate individuals and teams grounded in real world success.
The KGI assessment is the only instrument that integrates four aspects of group life to help teams generate synergy and achieve optimal performance.
What the KGI Assessment Focuses On
The KGI assessment explores people's patterns of group behavior along four critical dimensions - Leadership, Negotiation Orientation, Task Focus, and Interpersonal Focus. A diamond-shaped model helps to illustrate the instrument's design.
Leadership measures the ability of a team member to guide the group towards potent collaboration and successful task completion.
Negotiation Orientation measures the ability of members to listen closely to one another and to construct mutually acceptable agreements.
Task Focus measures the ability of members to devise a sound strategy for the task and to carry out the plan fruitfully.
Interpersonal Focus measures the ability of members to develop a team spirit and to attend to the feeling issues in the group.
The four major scales are broken down into nine subscales that provide you and your team with clear action steps to expand your performance. Currently, this is the only assessment available that allows you to address these four vital areas in a single instrument.
You can take the KGI assessment in two different ways:
As an individual you take the KGI® Individual Administration when you want to learn about and improve your skills for participating in small groups and teams. The assessment can be taken from either a specific or general perspective (read Preparing to Take the KGI). Results from the individual administration are delivered in the form of a downloadable KGI® Individual Profile.
As a member of a small group you and other members take the KGI® Group Administration from either a specific or general perspective (read How to Take). In addition to receiving the confidential KGI® Individual Profile, members receive a downloadable KGI® Group Profile. It includes an overview of the team's collective results, recommendations for improvement, guidelines for developing and implementing an action plan, and more.
A KGI® Group Administration is intended for use with teams having 3 to 10 members. Research on small group performance has shown that groups with five members tend to have the highest productivity. For groups of 11 to 15 members, it is possible to successfully adapt the group process suggestions from a KGI® Group Profile, with the understanding that adjustments may need to be made.
Both individual and group administrations include a downloadable KGI® User's Guide. The group facilitator has access to a downloadable KGI® Manual, intended for use by all interested team members. Also purchasable from us-- Leadership Transformation: The Klein Group Instrument® Facilitator's Guide.
